What is Solvent Extraction?

Solvent extraction is the most efficient way to recover oil from oilseeds and from the residual cake left after mechanical pressing. Prepared, flaked seed is washed counter-currently with food-grade hexane in a percolation extractor, where the solvent dissolves the oil to form a liquid mixture called miscella.

The miscella is distilled to separate clean oil from the solvent, while the de-oiled meal passes through a Desolventiser–Toaster (DT) that heats it with steam to strip and recover every last trace of hexane. Efficient condensing systems recover well over 95% of the solvent, keeping the process economical and environmentally sound.

The Process

Preparation & Conditioning

Cleaning, cracking, flaking and heating the seed for optimum extraction.

Counter-current Extraction

Hexane percolates through the seed bed, dissolving the oil into miscella.

Miscella Distillation

The oil–solvent mixture is distilled to recover clean crude oil.

Desolventiser–Toaster

Steam strips residual solvent from the meal and conditions it.

Solvent Recovery & Condensing

Vapours are condensed and the hexane is recovered and reused (>95%).
